A hall cooled by roof vents and a deep-shaded terrace, in Aziz Tayob's hometown.
A hall for the whole community
The chance to contribute to Brits, the town where Aziz Tayob grew up, was one he welcomed. Despite a limited budget, the practice designed a hall that could serve many community needs: weddings, public meetings and school concerts.
Room to grow
A large covered terrace wraps the hall, giving extra flexibility so that even bigger gatherings can spill outside under shade.
Cooled by design
In response to the hot climate, vents in the apex of the roof can be opened. Warm air escapes at the top, drawing cooler air through the hall from the deep-shaded terrace.
Colour on a budget
Simple materials are enlivened with splashes of colour: red bullnose eaves along the terrace, exposed steel trusses painted yellow, bright bands of pink, and chequered floor tiles in the hall.
