The first built version of the 1969 thesis, with domed prayer cubicles that glow like moons at night.
The idea
Modern in form and traditional in how it works. Visitors enter a double-volume hall beside the square minaret and glimpse the prayer space across a courtyard and water feature, which muffles sound between the two.
The route through shoe removal and ablutions keeps the hygiene zones in a logical order, with custom red fibreglass wash troughs. Meditation cubicles each have a small white fibreglass dome; lit from inside, they appear as moons at night.
Down to the details
A concrete frame with brick infill gave the building its rhythm of piers and domes. The office also designed the carpet layouts and a clock face with stylised Arabic numerals.
Growing with the community
The practice returned to add classroom wings around 1982, and later a barrel-vaulted roof over the courtyard, turning it into a bright, covered extension of the prayer space with walls of glass block and round windows. The mosque has since been modified further by others.
