Sunrise School
Laudium, Pretoria · 1982 – 1993
A school for children with special needs, planned around two safe courtyards.
The school
Sunrise School serves children with special needs. It stands at the entrance to Laudium and was one of three community schools the practice planned for Laudium from the 1980s, funded mainly by the community as non-profit institutions.
The design
The school uses the same twin-courtyard concept as the Tshwane Muslim School: classrooms enclose two courtyards, creating a safe learning environment. Planning began in 1982 and construction was completed around 1993.
